Colourful silver brooch
A playful statement brooch for that navy dress
The conversation for this project started around a pendant I was working on, on the day my client came to visit. I showed her the work in progress – composed of several stones, placed around structural lines. This sparked off our conversation and was the inspiration for this statement piece – my client was looking to embellish a specific navy dress with a colourful brooch.
During the commissioning process we discussed colour palettes and I suggested a grouping of gemstones, balancing the strong colours of tourmaline, peridot and blue topaz with the paler tones of yellow beryl and aquamarine.
Painterly colour composition
The brooch is a fascinating medium as it enables a painterly composition in gems and precious metals. This is a relatively new way of working for me: less linear, thinking more in terms of clusters, layout and composition.
The finished brooch features a striking selection of gemstones in shades of blue, yellow and green – seemingly floating around the silver angled lines, with two sparkly diamonds. Set in handmade mounts in brushed sterling silver and 18ct gold, this is a striking brooch which I hear gets lots of wear, and works perfectly on ‘that navy dress’!
